Meningococcal infections are a major cause of severe bacterial infectious disease in children.Infection can result in differentforms and the mostcommorüsmeningitis.There are alsopredisposing to infection such as poverty, overcrowding or immune deficiency. These infections usuallyoccurduringlatewinter and earlyspring. Theymainly affect childrenunder 5 years and adolescents aged 15 and 18 years. The severity of the infection depends on the host pathogen and environrnentalfactors.Neisseria meningitidis, the causative agent of meningococcal infections,is a gram-negativediplococci. There are thirteendifferentserogroups .Transmission is by respiratorydroplets due to close contact between people. Recognition of the symptoms of the infection is very important becauseitcanadvance to deathwithinhours.The features are fever, headache, photophobia, and purpura.In very young children, we can observe abulging fontanel.The diagnosisisbased on finding the bacteria in the cerebrospinalfluid and skin lesions.The childdiagnosedwithrneningococcal infection shouldberapidlyundertreatment to avoid complications. Preventionisbased on the isolation of the infected for 24 hoursafter the antibiotics have been administeredperson. It isalsonecessary to treat people in close contact with the patient .Vaccination against mening ococcaldiseaseis reconunended in Belgium. It onlyprovides protection only for serogroupC.Thereisanother vaccine againststrains A, C, W135 thatisreconunendedwhen traveling in Africa. Les infections à méningocoques sont l'une des principales causes de maladie infectieuse bactérienne sévère chez l'enfant. Une infection peut se traduire par différentes et la plus courante est la méningite. Il existe également des facteurs prédisposant à l'infection comme la pauvreté, le surpeuplement ou un déficit immunitaire. Ces infections surviennent généralement pendant la fin de l'hiver et au début du printemps. Elles touchent majoritairement les enfants de moins de 5 ans et les adolescents entre 15 et 18 ans. La sévérité de l'infection dépend de l'hôte, du pathogène et des facteurs environnementaux. Neisseirameningitdis, l'agent pathogène responsable des infections méningocoques, est un diplocoque à gram négatif. Il existe treize sérogroupes différents. La transmission se fait par des sécrétions suite au contact étroit entre personnes. La reconnaissance des symptômes de l'infection est très importante car elle peut évoluer jusqu'à la mort en quelques heures. Les caractéristiques sont la fièvre, les maux de tête, la photophobie et le purpura. Chez les très jeunes enfants, on peut observer un bombement de la fontanelle. Le diagnostic repose principalement sur la recherche de la bactérie dans le liquide céphalo-rachidien et dans les lésions cutanée. L'enfant admis ou suspecté d'une infection à méningocoque doit rapidement être sous antibiothérapie afin d'éviter les complications. La prévention repose sur l'isolement de la personne infectée pendant 24 à 48 heures après que!'antibiothérapie ; il est nécessaire de traiter également les personnes en contact étroit avec le malade .La vaccination contre le méningocoque est recommandée en Belgique. Il n'offre qu'une protection uniquement pour le sérogroupe C. Il existe un autre vaccin contre les souches A, C, W135 qui est recommandé lors d'un voyage en Afrique.
